JAPN 483: Modern Japanese Literature and Culture in Translation
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00 - 3:15pm, CBA 108
Instructor: Dr. Ikuho Amano

No prerequisite. In this course you will be immersed in the richness and diversity of Japanese literature and culture. Our course discussion covers a wide spectrum of themes that allow us to explore intersections between socio-cultural realities and power of creativity Japanese  artists has forged since the late nineteenth century to the present. In order to explore representative works of modern ages (Meiji, Taishoo, Showa, and current Heisei periods), we will study not only novels and essays but also contemporary manga and anime.

In fall 2015 the course will give an emphasis on Japanese popular culture and its relation with geopolitics and global market economy.
