Faviola Meza’s journey at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has had some twists and turns. As a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, Meza has not let road bumps get her down.

Her goals and head are held high as she closes in on her dream of becoming a nurse.

Meza is a first generation college student pursuing her degree in Spanish  with a minor in Child, Youth, and Family Studies. She knew she wanted to be a Nebraska Cornhusker upon the completion of her first campus tour during high school. However, transitioning from high school to college was a different story. Struggling to adjust and unable to focus on her studies, Meza was placed on academic probation.

This setback led to one of her most memorable achievements: receiving a 3.0 and being reinstated to the University.

Upon her return to UNL, Meza was named an ambassador for the college. This opportunity has given her the chance to be a leader, and for that she is forever grateful.

The connections Meza has made within the college have really driven her success, especially her relationship with advisor Tony Lazarowicz.

“He supported me every step of the way and listened when I needed someone to talk to about my career and life goals. Together we set up these goals and talked about how we could accomplish them. I am thankful that he supported me and I’m glad that I can count on him.”

With the combination of Meza’s determination and the support of the college, she will be graduating in May 2016 and attending a nursing program this fall. This will hopefully lead her to a career in neonatal nursing, women’s nursing or even nurse practitioner.

“As a CAS student I got the opportunity to meet new people and share my story. My experiences as a CAS student will impact my future career positively because I learned how to believe in myself. I believe that I can get into a nursing program and become the nurse that I have always wanted to be.”

Meza’s involvements outside of CAS include Mexican American Student Association, Pre-Nursing Club, Nebraska College Preparatory Academy, receptionist at the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, and American Medical Women's Association.
