This spring, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures formed a partnership with the Bureau of Sociological Research in order to deliver translation capabilities to campus, government, community and non-profit partners. The project – called the Nebraska Translator and Interpreter Corps (NETIC) connects graduate students and other participants with paid opportunities to connect with community partners and gain professional experience. In most cases, students are paired with a faculty mentor, who provides feedback on the work.
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, is extremely proud of all those who participated in the first group of projects over the course of the summer.
- Yassine Rfissa (DMLL and TLTE), Hector Palala Martinez (TLTE), and Elliott Jacobson (Spanish) helped to get vital information about COVID-19 out to the community in weekly interpretations of the Mayor’s press briefings.
- Alfonso Bartolome (Spanish) consulted with a community project called the Alternatives to Violence Project.
- Ana Tudela Martinez (Spanish) helped with translations of some official documents
- Marcus Barbosa, a Spanish Ph.D. candidate, designed and launched the client and participant web form. This year he will coordinate the work flow and document the project.
We also appreciate the work and mentorship of Dr. Errapel Mejias-Vicandi and Dr. Isabel Velázquez on this first round of projects.
