Why German?
I chose to pursue a major in German because I have always loved language learning. Originally, German was only a minor for me, however, after meeting many other passionate language students in the German department, as well as the incredible support and understanding I received from my professors, I realized that I wanted to invest more in my German studies. Learning a second language helps you begin to bridge the gap between yourself and others– it changes your worldview and affords you a unique opportunity to reshape your understanding of how we as humans connect with one another through language and culture.

What's the best part about the German program?
The most rewarding and eye-opening experience I had through the German program was the study abroad trip to Berlin, which I participated in during the Spring of 2020. It is incredibly cliche to say that going to another country for an extended period of time is “life-changing,” but in many ways, it is. Visiting another country where you are not entirely fluent in the language opens your eyes to the raw moments of isolation and anxiety that many English language learners in the U.S. must often feel. Things like going out to get a coffee or doing groceries become nerve wracking– not because you are incapable of communicating in your second language, but because the people you encounter are sometimes impatient. People may appear annoyed that you cannot articulate your words as eloquently as a native speaker or that you haven’t picked up on certain customs. In my experience, being abroad, was in many ways, very difficult. However, through those difficult moments of cultural immersion, along with the ongoing support of my peers and instructors, I was able to gain newfound resilience and push my boundaries to further develop my language abilities.

What are your post-graduation plans?
After I graduate, I am hoping to either enroll in a graduate program at UNL or take a job with a local organization doing communications, and/or social media management work. Eventually, I would love to find a position doing reporting or copy editing for a print publication, but until then, I’m open to exploring whatever opportunities might come my way!
