by Morgan Groninger January 20, 2021

Hassan Almokhreq has always had a passion to help spread knowledge in his community. He teaches students about Arabic language and culture in his position as lecturer at UNL and has been involved in multiple student organizations. This year, his latest challenge will allow him help more people than ever.

“I am driven by a passion and desire to help people achieve their goals and spread knowledge.”

In January of 2021, Almokhreq was elected President of Saudis in the USA, a non-profit volunteer organization established in 2008. Saudis in USA provides support for Saudis coming to the United States for education and tourism, as well as providing additional social services. It boasts a large scholarship program, making an American education attainable for many Saudi students. Almokhreq calls it “a significant source for many Saudi students and families.”

His appointment came with an opportunity to introduce Saudis in USA to the UNL campus. Almokhreq has always felt supported at UNL, and with help from Dr. Abla Hasan and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Saudis in USA became a Recognized Student Organization. Almokhreq hopes to help other Saudi students on campus connect with their home country through news, social media, education, and meeting opportunities. He also wants to help Saudi students who may be having difficulty adjusting to life at UNL, either academically, socially, or culturally, to provide them with a community on campus.

“I believe that UNL has a great environment for [this] organization. It is home to more than 3,220 international students from 114 different countries. UNL students and community members have a great opportunity to discover many cultures without leaving campus.”

Almokhreq would like to thank Dr. Abla Hasan of UNL Arabic, Dr. Nora Peterson, Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and Joe Hagerty of Student Involvement for all of their help in bringin Saudis in USA to UNL.
